This new University Centre was designed, detailed and project managed by Nicola Page whilst working as a Project Architect for another architectural practice.
This University Centre was a joint venture between Anglia Ruskin University and Harlow College to provide purpose-built higher education in Harlow. The existing Harlow college campus on Velizy Avenue was enhanced to address the future needs of both the University and College and to allow for inclusive access for all.
creating a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment
The new university centre provides a range of adaptable higher educational accommodation
and includes areas for journalism (a higher education course for which Harlow College has a national reputation), a Business Centre with an i-Lab, a 99-seat lecture theatre and a range of other teaching and ancillary accommodation. The internal layout of the building is intended to maximise short- and long-term adaptability whilst creating a stimulating and enjoyable learning environment.
two unequal wings
At the heart of this three-storey building is a full height atrium which enables users to understand at a glance how the building is organised and to orientate themselves.
At the back of the atrium is the lecture theatre which is expressed as a feature both internally and externally. Either side of this are two unequal wings containing the teaching and learning accommodation.
